Sustainability

Our commitment

It is important to us to make the lake crossing as sustainable as possible. Here is an overview of some of our measures:

Waste
  • We use reusable dishes for food and drinks.
  • We use recyclable barrier tape made from renewable materials.
  • We attach advertising banners with reusable Velcro fasteners.
  • If you do not wish to take your swimming cap home with you, you can leave it at the exit. They will be reused in swimming lessons organised by the City of Zurich.
  • Waste is collected during the event, correctly separated and disposed of.

Traffic and transport
  • We recommend that all participants travel by public transport.
  • We do not provide parking spaces.
  • We coordinate material transport so that as few trips as possible are required.

Environment
  • Participants enter and exit the water via the official lake access points.
  • Our volunteers' shirts are made from organic cotton, are produced in an environmentally friendly manner and are used for several years.
  • We take care of the lawn and trees in the grounds. For example, we use lawn protection for heavy objects and do not install anything on trees.

Catering
  • The catering is vegetarian and sourced from the region.
  • We offer free water at drinking stations. On average, this saves around 10,000 PET bottles and 1 tonne of CO2 (find out more).
  • We cook the food on an ongoing basis and adjust the amount of food to the actual number of participants. Food leftovers are sent to the biogas plant.

Energy and infrastructure
  • We use existing infrastructure and buildings.
  • In addition to the existing toilets, we provide environmentally friendly composting toilets.

Communications and sponsoring
  • We use FSC-certified paper.
  • We do not produce flyers and are continuously reducing the number of posters we print.

Ethics and social issues
  • We make sure that all written documents use gender-neutral language.
  • People with disabilities are welcome.
